EVELYN MURRAY
When Chuck Wagner's father, Jack Wagner, Sr., left to serve in World War II, his wife Evelyn stepped in to run the family roofing firm. "According to family folklore," says Chuck, "she always rounded up the bills for Wagner services. For example, a $43.50 charge became $44." When Jack returned, the customers greeted him with, "Thank God you're back, Jack. We couldn't stand Evelyn's 'high' prices much longer." Now in her 80s, Evelyn's still working-these days as a White House volunteer. She was recently honored for her service at the White House with the following tribute:
Evelyn Murray has been a Thursday volunteer since the Reagan Administration in 1983. During all of this time, she has worked primarily on the Comment Line.
A second generation Washingtonian, Evelyn has a long and proud history with the White House. Evelyn was instrumental in the fundraising for the beautiful non-denominational Chapel constructed at Camp David during the Reagan Administration. Evelyn delights in relating the history of the Chapel, discussing its design and recalling the marvelous dedication ceremony that she was able to attend. She even owns some of the stained glass used in the Chapel.
Over the years, Evelyn remembers many wonderful experiences and special events. She can recount seeing the Reagans' Friday helicopter departures from the South Lawn. She also tells of playing with both the Reagans' and Bushes' dogs.
An active volunteer in other areas, Evelyn has been involved with the American Woman's Heart Board, the International Heart Board and the Lombardy Cancer Center. Twice widowed, she is married to Tom Murray. She is the mother of two sons and has four grandchildren.
Evelyn loves this Administration and states, "Mrs. Bush is so charming. I just love them both so much."
The President and Mrs. Bush thank Evelyn for her support, dedication and good work!
